Teen and Alumni Activities

For many homeschooled teens from across the state, the NCHE annual conference is the highlight of the year. In addition to the many wonderful workshops, they look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. For the third year NCHE has planned social activities to encourage these friendships. Both of these activities will have adult supervision. Full conference registration is required for these activities.

Dance Class

Historically, dance has been an important social skill. Even our country's military academies make dance lessons mandatory for young cadets. Dance education develops grace, poise, posture and coordination, and has been proven to be an inherent part of our culture. In keeping with these traditions, NCHE will host a cotillion-style dance on Thursday evening from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. There will be instruction on dances such as swing, box step, and line dancing. This year we will offer two classes, divided by age. Ages twelve to fourteen will be in the Hearn Ballroom taught by Judy Eddy, an NCHE board member who has taught dance classes for her homeschool group. Ages fifteen and up will be in the Pavillion, taught by Dennis Ritchie, a homeschool dad who has taught cotillion for more than twenty-five years. Our teachers' teaching styles will put any students at ease regardless of their ability and teens are encouraged to dance with many partners. For siblings who prefer not to divide, we will be flexible about the age guidelines. The dress for these dances is modest casual (what you wear to the conference).

Games Social

A games social will be held in the Pavillion Friday night from the closing of the talent show until 11:30 p.m. NCHE will provide cards, board games and group games for our teens and alumni, from all areas of the state, to play while they get to know each other.

Leaders' Track

We have four sessions picked specifically for support group leaders. The support group leaders' luncheon will begin the leaders' track. The next three workshops, picked specifically for our leaders, will be in the same room (the Hearn ballroom). There will be seating available for those who would like to attend the luncheon workshop, but not the luncheon.

  • Luncheon talk: Session 5, The Seven Termites in Homeschool Organizations, Kevin Swanson—Watch out for these guys! Kevin describes the seven species of termites that are known to eat the core out of our homeschool organizations (or even churches or families). This information is an essential requisite to anybody in leadership.
  • Session 6, Panel Discussion for Support Group Leaders—Bring your questions to this panel discussion featuring several NCHE board members. Many years of homeschool and leadership experience will be available for a question, answer and discussion session.
  • Session 7, Let's be R.E.A.L. Leaders, Dari MullinsLeaders know the importance of their role in the organization, but it's easy to lose sight of who they are as a person. It is important that we be genuine with those who we are leading. Come be encouraged as R.E.A.L. leaders and focus on the heart of leadership. This workshop focuses on the spirit of leadership rather than the actual tasks involved in leading.
  • Session 8, Families Encouraging Families, Vicki Bentley—In this interactive session, Vicki discusses four basic needs of homeschool families and shares practical ways for leaders to encourage those families without discouraging their own!
