Getting Started–Connect

There has never been a better time to homeschool!  You have decided to homeschool in an era with more opportunities than ever before—both in the number of groups and diversity of groups devoted to helping home educators.

Homeschool support groups, co-ops, and associations are primarily comprised of like-minded volunteers who choose to discover or reinforce portions of their learning through connecting with others.  Homeschool groups express a wide range of organizational preferences, attitudes, and practices, which means there is definitely a tribe for you!

Regional

Regional associations typically have their own stated purpose, calendar of activities, resources (such as libraries) and membership requirements.  Some areas of our state have multiple associations, while some areas do not have any.  Many are oriented toward directly serving homeschoolers in a particular area. For example, Forsyth Home Educators (FHE) serves the homeschooling families of Forsyth county.

To find local groups near you, go to NCHE regions page to find your regional liaison or to see a list of local groups.

Curricular

Some groups are curricular-oriented and devoted to supporting particular educational activities or ideologies. Co-ops focused on a classical education or those who follow the Charlotte Mason educational philosophy are two such curricular groups. Most of the time, these groups are locally based.

State

North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) is a private, non-profit, volunteer organization active at the state level, serving homeschoolers in North Carolina and beyond. This is us! We are here to provide support on a state-wide level. You can join us and become part of the organization that has been instrumental in making NC a great place to homeschool and keeping it that way.

NCHE’s mission is to help parents homeschool with confidence and joy!
We do this by working to:

  • Protect the rights of North Carolina citizens to homeschool,
  • Equip families with the information and encouragement they need,
  • Connect families with other homeschooling families and groups across the state.

National

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is a nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children and to protect family freedoms. Through annual memberships, HSLDA is tens of thousands of families united in service together, providing a strong voice when and where needed. HSLDA advocates on the legal front by fully representing member families at every stage of proceedings.

HSLDA advocates on Capitol Hill by tracking federal legislation that affects homeschooling and parental rights. HSLDA works to defeat or amend harmful bills, but also works proactively, introducing legislation to protect and preserve family freedoms.

NCHE members receive a discount on their HSLDA membership. Contact the NCHE office to get your group discount information.

Homeschool Legal Advantage (HLA)–an organizations focused on legal issues surrounding the practice of homeschooling.

The National Home Education Research Institute (HNERI) and International Center for Home Education Research (ICHER) are focused on the academic research of home education practices.
