Top Five Free Online Resources for Your Homeschool

I want to point you to some of the most amazing online sources of support for your homeschool, but first, I want to tell you why these resources are free. The A2K movement (i.e. access to knowledge) is a global social justice movement that argues in the new economy (created by the Internet and globalization) access to a world class education should be available to all—free. Wikipedia was just the first prominent outworking of this mindset. (To learn more about this movement just search on open knowledge movement, open culture or A2K.)

Competitive Debate: More Fun than You Think!

In 1999, we made the single best decision of our homeschooling experience. We decided to get involved in competitive speech and debate.

With an open slot in my schedule at the NCHE conference and on a whim, I walked into Teresa Moon’s workshop on competitive debate. I had heard of debate, of course, when I was in high school. My impression was that it was difficult and time-consuming. All that was about to change as she walked me through the benefits you receive from debating.

Homeschoolers and Online Classes

In recent years, homeschoolers have been receiving solicitations from a variety of online school programs. There are a number of online homeschools such as A Beka Academy, K12 Homeschool, Liberty University Online Academy and Keystone School Online. In 2012, some public school districts began to offer virtual classes to homeschool students, and now, NC virtual charter schools are recruiting students for the 2015-2016 school year. When opting for online classes, it is important to understand the NC homeschool law.

Homeschoolers and Public School Virtual Classes

There has been a lot of confusion about the status of homeschool students who take public school virtual classes. The confusion began when Iredell County began to offer NC virtual classes to homeschool students in 2012, and the confusion increased when NC virtual charter schools began recruiting students for this fall.

How to Give Yourself a Scholarship

One February morning a few years ago, I stood in my son’s bedroom looking at his Apologia biology textbook. He had been diligently working his way chapter by chapter through the book, and I was preparing to quiz him on the vocabulary and end of chapter review questions. “This is such a thorough course,” I thought to myself. “It’s too bad that he’ll have to learn it all over again in a few years when he goes off to college.”

Are You Considering Military Service?

Spring is the time to take action if a home-educated child is interested in a military academy nomination or a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship leading to a commission as a military officer. Note that spring is specifically time to take action, not just time to prepare.

Community Service: Get Involved (and Keep Records!)

I recently wrote a post to the NCHE Facebook page on community service, and it sparked such an interest that I decided to expound a bit more in this article for GREENHOUSE. Community service is an important part of living. For Christians, it is an act of faith that strengthens our relationships here and above. As with all selfless acts, the benefit is infinitely more within us than to those we help, and we grow through serving. Building a strong sense of civic duty and an ability to see needs in our community is an important part of educating our children—an important part of growing up.

Understanding and Evaluating the World of Online Education

What shall we do with online classes? We shall do the same thing homeschoolers have been doing with curricula since homeschooling began—experiment, find what works for us, talk about them to others and use them as a tool to homeschool our kids. We will educate ourselves about them and then move forward. The following information will help you do just that.

What are online classes?

Our definition of online classes includes:

The Final Test: Or Is It?

The long awaited letter had finally arrived - funny how one piece of mail could cause so much anxiousness in a household.
