Get your mind “flown” at the new Sullenberger Aviation Museum!

Join NCHE on our first ever field trip to the Sullenberger Aviation Museum, 4108 Minuteman Way, Charlotte, NC.  Founded in 1992 and originally named the Charlotte Aviation Museum, a new facility was built and re-opened on June 1, 2024, as the Sullenberger Aviation Museum.  Named for the “Miracle on the Hudson” pilot “Sully Sullenberger,” the museum features 40 iconic aircraft–including Sully’s plane–inspiring visitors to pursue their dreams of taking flight and writing their own stories into the future of aviation. Additionally, the museum features replicas of the Wright Brothers’ Flyer and Glider planes, a Vietnam-era F-4S Phantom II, one of only two manufactured Skystreak planes used to test breaking the sound barrier, and a P-80 (TV-1 Shooting Star), one of the first jet fighters used during combat. Visitors can try out flight simulators and sit in cockpits imagining the feeling of flying these craft.  Immersive storytelling and hands-on, interactive exhibits capture the imagination of kids of all ages.

This is a self-paced field trip allowing you to spend as much time in any one area of interest as you wish.  The average visit time is 2 hours.   Ample, free parking is available.  For lunch, you are welcome to go about 5 miles to the CLT Airport Overlook for a picnic, playtime (great playground here) and to have a close-up view of flights coming and going from the airport.  You will be able to register for either the morning (10 a.m. arrival) or afternoon (12:30 p.m. arrival) sessions.  An optional scavenger hunt will be available for purchase for $5 in the gift shop upon arrival (I’m told one/family is sufficient.)  Tickets, including taxes and fees are:

Adults $22.00
Students (ages 5 through graduation): $17.75
Preschoolers (4 and younger): free
