No sooner was I sorting through last year’s stack of dog-eared books, wrinkled papers, and half-finished word searches than it’s time to plan the next school year. My social media feeds are plastered with beautiful planners, curriculum stacks, and color-coded schedules pushing me to get to work on the next school year. Maybe you’re still trying to figure out your homeschool style or which curriculum you want to use. You may even be deciding if you should homeschool at all this year because you don’t feel like last year went well. Whether you’re a detailed planner with color-coded tabs or someone who writes appointments on the nearest sticky note, having a plan for the year can be incredibly helpful. But before you rush out to buy another planner—or fill in the blank pages of the one you already have—remember that the planner itself isn’t what makes a homeschool successful. It’s a valuable tool, but there are a few things that matter even more. Keeping our purpose in mind serves as our compass in the storms of life that inevitably come along. When difficult days cause us to doubt, when lost books and disagreeable children cause us to despair, reminding ourselves of the reason we are doing this guides us back on course. Redefine your “why” at the start of every school year: Why did your family choose homeschooling? If you have been homeschooling for any length of time, you have likely answered this more times than you’ve sharpened pencils that somehow disappeared by lunchtime. But it’s important to contemplate the answer for yourself. What was it deep within that compelled you to make such a life-altering choice? The follow-up question that helps you determine your long-term vision is: What do you hope your children remember twenty years from now? Academic success is only one part of the goal. I’m sure we all share that hope for our children. But beyond that, if we can envision sitting down with our grown children in twenty years for a conversation looking back on their younger years, what do you want to hear from them? What do you want to be the ideas, actions, routines that shaped them? These questions help you define your mission. A planner should serve your mission—not become your mission. Once your purpose is clear, it’s easier to decide what deserves space in your schedule. Society is quick to impress upon us a need to succeed and eager to give us a picture of what that looks like. We are apt to go along with that definition if we are not intentional about clarifying it for ourselves. As you consider what a successful year actually looks like for your family, look beyond academics. If it’s been said once, it’s been said a thousand times, but I’ll repeat for those of us at the back: the lasting value in our homeschooling days extends much further than the important dates in history, multiplication tables, and understanding the laws of physics. Make a list of three or four top priorities that have nothing to do with math, reading, or geography. If you sit and think for just a few minutes about what is important to you, the only effort it will take is in limiting it to such a small number. For example, you may want to focus on: Growing in character Strong family relationships Curiosity and love of learning Faithfulness instead of perfection When you know what matters most, everything else becomes easier to organize. These become your guiding principles as you compare math curriculum choices, select textbooks, and move into forming lesson plans. Whether you have one child or a houseful, it is inevitable that you will encounter sick days (parents and/or the kids), appointments that must be kept, bad attitudes (again, parents and/or the kids!). Not all interruptions to our routine are bad. Unexpected opportunities, good conversations we don’t want to rush to end, or an unplanned field trip that opens up…while these are all positives, they still throw off a rigid schedule. In fact, I’ve learned that the best plan is to expect the unexpected. I tend to overschedule myself and my homeschool. That doesn’t just mean that I’ve put too much into each day, but that I left no room in the margin. We are working to cultivate our families, not just work through a daily checklist. Plants need room to grow and overcrowding not only inhibits growth but can lead to weak, diseased plants. The same applies to families.
