This year NCHE was able to award five scholarships! The scholarship categories were academic, arts, scholar-athlete, HINTS Community Service, and Apologia Missions and Ministry.<\/p>\n

The NCHE scholarship program was instituted in 1998 to encourage and reward excellence in homeschooling in North Carolina. Since it began, the program has awarded over $150,000. Winners have chosen to study at institutions such as UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, Duke, the US Air Force Academy, Moody Bible Institute, Patrick Henry College, as well as non-degree programs in aviation and missions.<\/p>\n

All applicants must be full-time homeschooled high school seniors whose families are members of NCHE and in compliance with NC laws governing homeschools. The scholarship application process opens in December. Students must complete an application, gather standardized test scores, collect letters of recommendation, and write essays explaining their experiences and vision for the future. NCHE awards scholarships that are generously funded by Apologia Publishing and the HINTS homeschool support group in south Charlotte. In addition, individual members and supporters of NCHE donate to provide other scholarships awarded by NCHE. We are excited to announce the 2018 winners.<\/p>\n

\"\"Anthony Chaffey<\/strong>, winner of the Academic Scholarship<\/em> and son of Dan and Vivian Chaffey of Charlotte, plans to attend Cedarville University in Ohio to study computer engineering. From a young age, Anthony loved problem solving. An eighth-grade engineering class confirmed that\u2019s where he belonged! He hopes one day to use his skills to design and build things that will impact the world for the better.<\/p>\n

\"\"Bethany Brinson<\/strong>, winner of the Arts Scholarship<\/em> and daughter of Cliff and Christi Brinson of Holly Springs, will study piano performance at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. The winner of numerous music awards, Bethany is also interested in composing and scoring.<\/p>\n

\"\"Natalia Padua<\/strong>, winner of the Scholar-Athlete Scholarship<\/em> and daughter of Tony and Aleksandra Padua of Cary, plans to study fashion design at either Liberty or Appalachian State. Natalia was on the NCHEAC women\u2019s volleyball team, the Durham Flight, for years including being captain in 2017 when the team won the state championship. She has traveled extensively in Europe and will be spending part of the next year at the Discipleship Training School of Youth with a Mission (YWAM) in London.<\/p>\n

\"\"Mark Rowan<\/strong>, winner of the HINTS Community Service Scholarship<\/em> and son of Jeff and Beth Rowan of Winston-Salem, will be attending Cedarville University\u2019s pre-med program in the fall. Some of Mark\u2019s extracurricular activities include ten years of piano and years on several soccer teams, including the NCHEAC Forsyth Home Educators. He used those skills in community service through volunteer coaching of the Under-Six league of the Northern Triad Soccer Club and playing piano at a local nursing home and at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.<\/p>\n

\"\"Kierstyn Kiser<\/strong>, winner of the Apologia Missions and Ministry Scholarship<\/em> and daughter of Shannon and John Kiser of Charlotte, plans to pursue studies to become a nurse. Sparked by several life experiences with critically ill family members and her studies in Apologia\u2019s biology and human anatomy courses, this choice has been confirmed by God as vocation she can use to serve Him regardless of the locale.<\/p>\n

She has served on the boards of several support groups and as an adviser to the Zeta Epsilon chapter of the National Homeschool Honor Society. Wife to Barry and mom to four homeschooled graduates, Evelyn enjoys traveling, leading Gavel Clubs for teens, and advising other homeschool families as they journey through high school.
