Chess Network Mid-Winter Tournament February 1, 2025, 12:30 pm Kernersville Pre-Registration Required Learning chess?\u00a0 Here\u2019s the perfect way to spend a winter afternoon advancing your game!\u00a0 The NCHE Chess Network invites students to participate in a Mid-Winter Tournament.\u00a0 Students will play at least four games\u2013and may have time to play additional \u201cpick up\u201d games as well.\u00a0 Students will have the opportunity to challenge their skills and, if they wish to compete, to advance through tournament style bracketing. FAQs \u00a0Who can play?\u00a0\u00a0The Mid-Winter Day of Play\/Tournament is designed for homeschooled students 5 and older. \u00a0My child is new to chess.\u00a0 Can he play, too?\u00a0 Players should know how the pieces move, including the details associated with castling, checking the King, promoting a pawn, and capturing \u201cen passant.\u201d Players should be able to recognize an illegal move, as well as checkmate and stalemate. \u00a0 He should know how a Knight moves, or what is meant by \u201ccheckmate.\u201d\u00a0 Please be certain that your child can play an entire game correctly according to the rules of chess before signing up. Will my elementary-age student have to play high schoolers?\u00a0 Depending on numbers of students of different ages, there will be at least 2 separate age-level groups. An elementary student (roughly through age 12) would be in a different section than a high school student. However, the top students in each group might have a playoff for the overall Tournament Champion. How do you pair players?\u00a0\u00a0In general, we will attempt to pair players with equal scores when possible, and also to equalize color allocations. \u00a0This is a \u201cRapid Pairing Chess\u201d tournament, which means that each child plays a game, comes with his opponent to the Tournament Director (TD) when finished, and will be paired up with another player as soon as one with similar scores has finished his or her game. Because of the need to match players with similar scores, there may be some wait time for players between games. Am I going to be required to keep\u00a0score?\u00a0In order to facilitate the matching of players with similar skills, we will be furnishing score sheets, pens or pencils. At the end of each game, players will note who won and which pieces were captured.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry\u2013it\u2019s not complicated and we\u2019ll show the players what to do!\u00a0 Players who elect to keep chess notation (a record of which pieces moved where during the game) will need to bring their own record keeping equipment and must be able to notate their games without slowing down play. Will timers be used?\u00a0\u00a0No. Overall game time will be limited to 25 minutes.
