Come with NCHE to visit the newly renovated Morehead Planetarium & Science Center in Chapel Hill.  The facility, originally opened in 1947, has recently undergone a $9.2 million renovation.  Our 2022 Morehead Planetarium visit will include admission to all new and permanent exhibits on astronomy, biology, marine science, biomedical engineering, AND a planetarium showing of “Carolina Skies.”  “Carolina Skies” takes visitors on a guided tour of the nighttime sky as it appears that very night–April 8–above North Carolina. Visitors learn how to identify celestial objects visible to the naked eye and how to find the cardinal directions using celestial signposts.  Approximately 45 minutes.  Maximum registration: 120.

The Planetarium is also offering us two optional upgrades, only available to our group:
1.  “Solar Systematics” hands-on class:  What does our solar system really look like? How do we know? In this hands-on adventure, students become NASA engineers as they collaborate in teams to design, build and test interplanetary landers that are needed to explore rocky worlds like Mars.  45 minutes.  Suitable for students in grades 3-8.  Maximum Registration:  60  NOTE:  Students only.
2.  “Magnificent Matter” Science Stage Show: We’ll learn about the states of matter, examine some tricky materials that exist between states, make instant “snow”, and cap it all off by observing some colorful combustions using the chemical properties of different elements.  45 minutes.  Suitable for all ages (but aimed at 2nd-8th grades).  Maximum registration: 74

Planetarium show starts at 11:30; Solar Systematics class is as 12:30; Magnificent Matter stage show is at 1:30.

Children 2 and younger admitted free.  Tickets may be purchased until 11:59 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2022 or while supply lasts. Tickets are transferable to others for the same day but are non-refundable.

COVID:  While we have taken enhanced safety measures, an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place. The CDC advises that senior citizens and those with underlying health conditions are especially vulnerable. By participating in this field trip, you voluntarily assume all risk related to exposure of COVID-19.  In line with updated UNC System guidance, and based on Orange County Health Department, CDC, and NC DHHS policies, masks for visitors are now optional at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.
