Charlie Kirk, the College Scam, and Christian Higher Education
Should the Charlie Kirk assassination change how homeschoolers approach college? Campuses are increasingly opposed to the principles for which we chose to homeschool. Meanwhile, ballooning costs load students with debt and don’t always guarantee careers to justify it. Yet there is something valuable in higher education that we cannot completely abandon. What if there was a way to not just survive college with faith and wallets intact, but to be equipped to flourish spiritually and vocationally? Beth Thetford speaks and writes from her experience as a former homeschool mother of three through her ministry, A Simple Path. She has also worked on both sides of higher education, at a prestigious secular college and a classical Christian institution. She shares tips she learned along the way as her three homeschooled children graduated college without lingering debt, and attended law schools on full and near full-ride scholarships. Vocationally, they have gone on to be a partner at a Christian law firm, an attorney in DC, a vice president at a global bank, and an adjunct teacher at a Christian college. Her greatest joy is that her three children are thriving in Christ. They teach in their churches, lead small groups, and have founded two parachurch ministries. She will be joined by one of her sons, David, who helped launch a Christian college in Charlotte (New Aberdeen College).
