Can I homeschool my child through high school in North Carolina?

Yes. North Carolina families can homeschool their students throughout the high school years and through graduation. Parents oversee their homeschool program, including choosing courses, maintaining records, creating transcripts, and determining when their student has completed the requirements for graduation.

What courses does my homeschool high school student need to take?

North Carolina homeschools have flexibility in determining the courses and credits students complete for graduation. When planning a high school program, parents should also consider the requirements of colleges, universities, trade programs, military service, or other paths their student may pursue after graduation.

How do I create a homeschool transcript?

A homeschool transcript typically includes the student’s high school courses, credits earned, grades, GPA, and anticipated or actual graduation date. As the administrator of your homeschool, you can create and maintain your student’s official transcript. NCHE provides resources to help parents understand what to include and how to prepare one.

Who issues a homeschool diploma in North Carolina?

The administrator of the homeschool issues the graduate’s high school diploma—not NCHE or the State of North Carolina. NCHE provides information about preparing and issuing a diploma and offers opportunities for families to celebrate this important milestone.

Can homeschool students qualify for college scholarships?

Yes. Homeschool students can qualify for many merit-based, need-based, athletic, community, and private scholarships. NCHE also offers its own scholarship program for eligible North Carolina homeschool seniors from NCHE member families, with awards recognizing achievement in areas such as academics, the arts, community service, athletics, and missions and ministry. Since scholarship requirements and deadlines vary, students should begin researching opportunities well before senior year.

Can homeschool students take college classes while they are still in high school?

Yes. North Carolina homeschool students may have opportunities to take college-level courses while completing high school, including eligible students who participate in the state’s Career & College Promise dual-enrollment program. Requirements vary by program and institution.

How can my homeschool student strengthen their high school experience?

High school can include much more than academics. Students can pursue volunteer service, leadership, employment, internships, extracurricular activities, dual enrollment, and other opportunities. NCHE also offers programs such as the Page Program and Honor Society that give eligible homeschool students additional ways to learn, serve, and be recognized.

Does NCHE have a graduation ceremony for homeschool seniors?/span>

Yes. NCHE offers homeschool graduates an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishment through the NCHE graduation ceremony. Families can find information about participation, registration, deadlines, and other graduation resources through the High School section of the NCHE website.
